We know we have been quiet these past few weeks... it was difficult to hear the Board of Regent's decision not to charter Truxton Academy. We went into the Board meeting with NYSED's full support which has made it challenging to understand why the Board of Regents didn't vote to approve the charter. We are still confident in our school design and the public's need and desire to have an effective education that prepares our students for success in college, career and life.
We thought we would share the recommendation letter we received from NYSED with you. It is bitter sweet at this stage, but it does remind us that we are in this for the right reasons and with the right plan.
Dear Ms. Denkenberger,
Congratulations! I am pleased to inform you that the New York State Education Department has recommended that the Board of Regents approve the applications and issue initial charters to establish seven new charter schools including the proposed Truxton Academy Charter School.
The Department’s recommendation will be presented to the Board of Regents’ P-12 Committee on Monday, November 13, 2017 between 10:15 am-12:10 p.m. for discussion and consideration, and presented to the full Board of Regents on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 for approval and issuance of an initial charter. Applicant groups are welcome to attend these meetings; however, attendance is not necessary. Regardless Charter School Office staff will communicate with you via email after the Monday and Tuesday meetings. With bated breath, we look forward to welcoming you to the family of Regents-authorized charter schools!
In anticipation of Regents’ approval, the Charter School Office's New Schools Team has tentatively scheduled the first of eight monthly pre-opening conference calls/webinars which are structured to support and guide the Boards of Trustees and staff through the pre-opening process, including the completion of significant tasks by specific deadlines before your charter school can open for instruction. This first call/webinar is scheduled for Thursday, November 16th at 2:15 p.m., and instructions to access the call via audio and webinar will follow on Tuesday after the Regents’ vote.
It is expected that the Board Chair and/or designated school staff will participate on these calls. Other members of the school leadership and administration are welcome to participate as well. Minutes will be taken and sent to participating schools within a week. Upon completion of all tasks, usually in the months of July and August, the CSO’s New Schools Team will conduct a pre-opening site visit to assure that school facilities are up to code and to ascertain that all pre-required steps have been met by the school. Only then, the charter school will be authorized to commence instruction. Additional information may be found at Opening Procedures.
Additionally, four charter schools previously authorized by the Board of Regents but not yet open—Emblaze Academy Charter School, Key Collegiate Charter School, and Renaissance Charter School 2 and OnTech Charter School will also participant in these pre-opening conference calls as well. We are looking forward to welcoming and working with all of you to our new cohort of schools planning to open in 2018.
Please feel free to email Vickie Smith should you have any questions. We are looking forward to speaking with you next week. All the best,
David Frank, Executive Director
